[Drama Recap and Analysis] D-Day Episode 3

D-day (2015, South Korea)

[SPOILERS BELOW!] This is a recap and analysis of episode 3

Just like episode 1 and 2, episode 3 starts with the same high tempo. The earthquake continues to destroy the city and our main character, Ddol Mi and Lee Hae Sung are in the middle of the mess. Dr. Kang is out shopping with her son at the supermarket and as the earthquake strikes even the supermarket gets destroyed. Dr. Kang quickly runs to the car with her son to save their lives but gets into a car accident. The rest of Seoul's streets and bridges crumble down as if they're made of sand.  People scream and run for their lives. It's a complete disaster and no one even imagined that something like this could happen in South Korea.

After the earthquake calms down. Ddol Mi and Hae Sung try to look for survives or stumble across a hysterical man who begs Hae Sung to save his wife. The woman is stuck in the backseat of a car that can explode at any given moment. Hae Sung hesitates but when the man tells him that his wife is 8 months pregnant, Hae Sung decides to risk his life to get her out.

Meanwhile Dr. Kang wakes up inside her car and finds that her son Dongha isn't there anymore. She runs out of her car but Dongha is nowehere to be found. Desperate and hurt, Dr. Kang wobbles to the streets while screaming and crying for her son.
Hae Sung, Ddol Mi and the husband successfully manage to pull the pregnant woman out of the car right before it explodes, but Hae Sung tells the couple that the woman needs to scan her belly to see if the child is all right and that she'll probably give birth soon. The man tells her that they have nowhere to go and begs Hae Sung to help them but Hae Sung, for the first time, sadly rejects the patient and tells them that he can't since he doesn't know anything about gynecology. He tells them to go look for help at a bigger hospital as he bows down and curses himself for being so powerless in a situation like this.

Hae Sung and Ddol Mi then return to the hospital only to find that it's also been completely wrecked by the earthquake. The electricity is out as well, which is not a good sign. They quickly rush up to the emergency room to check up on the patients, especially the Minister that is still recovering from his surgery. He is fine as Nurse Ji Na watched over him during the earthquake and Hae Sung pats her shoulder and tells her that he is grateful that she stayed at the hospital. He then rushes up the stairs to his mother's room to see if she's okay.

Sadly, when he arrives his mom is lying on the floor beside the bed. Hae Sung rushes to pick her up and with cry stuck in his throat he apologizes for not being by her side until now. He tells her that no matter what happens she mustn't get hurt and she mustn't leave him (die). (That scene made me tear up. I started to sob like a dying whale ;_; no moooom don't die D'X) He hugs her before he leaves the room and meets up with Ddol Mi who asks him what they're supposed to do now.Hae Sung goes back to Ji Na and tells her that he doesn't know what's going on and that it's really odd how all the electricity is off. Nurse Kim Yoonseok steps inside the room, all pale in the face and tells them that  this is all the aftermath of the earthquake that has stuck Seoul. It takes a few seconds before Hae Sung and Ji Na recover from the sudden news. An earthquake in Seoul? How is that even possible?

The scene switches to the outside and we see Assemblyman Goo Ja Hyuk talk with her collegues about the earthquake and he requests the collegue to contact other people to find out how big of a damage the earthquake has caused.

Back in the hospital, Hae Sung and the others switch on the tv and watch the news reporter announce that it was indeed a earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 that recently hit Seoul and that it was the biggest earthquake to have ever accured in the Korean pennisula. Because of that, the buildings and streets weren't prepared for it and the damage the earthquake left behind is huge. The entire town is suffering from a electricity and water supply shut down because of this too.

Finding out that the water has been shut down, the fire fighter's express their frustration at their powerlessness in the situation with anger. Capitan Choi yells that it's so unfair how the firefighter's are forced to sit on the side and watch the fire without being able to extinguish it.

At the same time, since the hospital building has been announced unprepared for an earthquake, the doctors and nurses decide that it'd be best to transfer all the patience to the ground floor. Hae Sung says that they also need to prepare to take in patience that got wounded which causes him to clash with nurse Kim Yoonseok who tells him that she needs to rush home to check if her mother is okay. Hae Sung tries to convince her to stay and that they need her help. The nurse tells him even if she helped out the hospital has neither the capacity nor supplies to take in every injured person in Seoul. She also tells Hae Sung that shutting down the hospital would be the best thing to do but he ignores her and instead tells the others that they just have to be careful how they use the supplies. They don't have enough bandage aid or medicin or other things for everyone and therefore they have to be more "picky" with whom they decide to treat. They come up with a systeme where they'll mark the patience with red, black or other colour depending on in what condition they're in. Red is emergency, black is for patients who can't be saved etc. While this method may look cruel, it's the only way they can do it since they can't help every single patient, especially since the victims of the earthquake have yet to arrive.

Meanwhile, the victims of the earthquake all storm the hospital. But the nurses have no other choice but to lock the entrance door. A young man catches nurse Ji Na and begs her to check on his mother since she is "not breathing". Ji Na immidately calls for Ddol Mi who pronounces the woman dead and marks her with the colour black. The young man shouts and attacks Ddol Mi in affect as he's in denial.

Ji Na rushes to Hae Sung and tells him to come help Ddol Mi. When Hae Sung arrives on the scene, the young man starts to attack him and cuts his arm. As Hae Sung twiches in pain, Ddol Mi grabs the young man by the collar and tells him that she wants to save his mother but that she's already dead so there's nothing they can do. They don't even have the supplies needed to perform a surgery in this hospital right now, so it's indeed unfair, and the situation is shitty, but there's nothing they can do about it. However if the guy will feel better after hitting Ddol Mi then he can hit her much as he wishes. After the young man has calmed down, Ddol Mi treats Hae Sung's cut. It's deeper than they first thought and Ddol Mi tells him that they'll probably need anesthesia, which they don't have. Hae Sung tells her to just sew the wound without it, and he tries to stay calm but the pain is unbearable. However he manages to stay concious during the entire surgery, despite the pain.

Meanwhile, the pregnant woman and her husband arrive at the hospital and beg the nurses to help them. Nurse Kim Yoonseok tells them thay they can't since they don't have a gynelology department at the hospital. Hae Sung however, shows up and tells the two nurses to bring them in and prepare to give the birth.

While in the operation room, the group realizes that child birth and everything that goes with it is easier said than done. Ddol Mi tells Hae Sung that none of them has even seen a woman give birth but Hae Sung tells them they'll just have to do their best. The husband of the pregant woman interupts them and tells them that it's not just one baby, but two. The woman is pregnant with twins. Which makes the nurses and Hae Sung even more pale in the face. If anything goes wrong, they'll cause the death of not two but three individuals. (Perfect ._. Hae Sung sure is the luckiest man in the world these days....not).  Nurse Kim Yoonseok tells Hae Sung that even if they do manage to deliver the babies safely they still can't keep them alive since they don't have an incubator. The woman hears this and starts to beg Hae Sung to save her babies, even if she dies, they babies have to survive since the couple have been wishing for children for 7 years now, and now that they finally have them, they can't afford to loose them. Hae Sung shows his dedication to do his best as he tells the woman that even if he's never done this before, he'll try his best. And with that the childbirth process starts.
Meanwhile, the scene switches and we see a older man lying under a pile of rocks together with his son, Jiwon, and tells his son to stay calm and how they'll survive (I don't think we've seen these two before, at least I don't remember them...but I guess they're side character's for now so yeah...)
The scene switches again and this time we're underground, inside the underground-metro which has stopped in the middle of nowhere and we see the homeless man from episode 1 collect everyone and tell them to follow him since he knows the way up to the surface.

After that we're back in the hospital and the child birth was a success (what a miracle maker Hae Sung is T_T) however, even if the babies got delivered successfully, they'll need to be put into incubator to survive, and Hae Sung and Ddol Mi go up to the second floor to find something that could be used instead of a incubator.

As they look around they realize that the floor and walls are starting to fall apart. The building is not safe and Hae Sung tells the nurses to evacuate all the patience before the building collapses. Hae Sung runs up to his mom and piggy-back carries her down to the waiting room on the ground floor. There they're met by complaints and nag from the patience who refuse to leave the hospital but Hae Sung does his best to convince them that the building is dangerous and could collapse at any moment. The majority of the patience decide to listen and starts to follow Ddol Mi and the nurses out of the hospital.

Hae Sung tells the new parents that the babies need to be sent to a hospital with real incubators and Ddol Mi tells him that they can't just go to another hospital by foot since Seoul is a big city. Suddenly the husband gets in idea. There is a boat nearby which has a transceiver they can use to call on 911 so they can send helicopters to aid them. It sounds like a great idea to Hae Sung but on their way to the boat, some patience, 2 older men start to nag about how their legs hurt and how they want to return to the hospital. Nurse Park Ji Na tells them that it's dangerous but they don't listen and start to go back. Ddol Mi calls for Hae Sung who rushes after them. He tries to stop them but it just makes them run even quicker.

Hae Sung desperately yells after them to escape the building but it's too late, seconds after the men enter the building, the building collapses to the ground. Hae Sung screams, which makes Ddol Mi and the other's turn around and watch the hospital turn into ruins. With that, episode 3 ends with a cliffhanger.

My Thoughts:
Let me start off by letting out the anger that is boiling inside of me right now...ugh.....STUPID STUBBORN OLD MEN! x_x GAAAAAH. I don't care if this makes me sound like a cruel human being but people like those two kind of deserved that. Seriously, who in their right mind would reject the orders and desperate please from countless doctors and run to their own deaths like that? You've got to either be brainless or extremely stubborn <_<. Gosh. Idiots! I feel more bad for Hae Sung than for them, because this was their own fault, but Hae Sung will blame himself for this, I just know it. He's spend the rest of the next episode or even the rest of the drama blaming himself for not being able to save them <_< ugh.....
Okay, I'm fine now -takes a deep breath-. Let's continue.
Episode 3, it wasn't definitely more intense than the previous two, we're slowly stepping into the core of the drama. The natural disasters are striking left and right and this drama really focused on the tragic aftermath of a earthquake. It made me spill a few tears right from the first few scenes when we saw Dr. Kang desperately yell for her son. It broke my heart. I'm not a mother myself, but I love children and for some odd reason I always feel like I can connect to this motherly feeling between a mother and a child. That feeling that Dr. Kang must've felt must've been the worst thing in the world. You feel so helpless and powerless. Poor woman ._. I hope Dongha is alive.
Episode 3 was also the episode when we saw Hae Sung waver for the first time. For the very first time in his life (probably) he realized that he was powerless. He can't save everyone and it must've hit him quite deep but he remained calm and professional. This episode realy made open up my eyes to the reality that doctors and nurses must face on probably a daily basis. I never really thought much about it, but it must truly suck to see a patient and not be able to help that person. Not everyone can be saved, it doesn't have to be because the hospital lacks supplies, but just that the wound is too deep or something. It must truly suck to later on go up to the guardian or the patient's loved ones and tell them the sad news, to deal with their anger and their tears. Being a doctor isn't just about saving people, it's so much more complex than that. Their work is truly admirable and this drama made me realize all that. I think it didn't hit me until the scene when the young man started to scream and attack Ddol Mi. Humans and humans and I guess those reactions are inevitable and sadly doctors and nurses are the ones who get to take that shit firsthand. But because they are the ones who are exposded to it firsthand, it makes me admire then so much more. That moment when Ddol Mi stepped up and grabbed the guy's collar, it almost made me stand up and applause. I'm starting to really like her character, she's humane just like Hae Sung, but she also has that little detail to her that makes her unique. I can't wait to see how her character with develop in the next episodes.
Well then, until next time ~
