[Drama Recap and Analysis] D-Day Episode 2

D-Day (2015, South Korea)

[SPOILERS BELOW!] This is a recap and analysis of episode 2

Episode 2 picks up right where episode 1's ended in a cliffhanger. Lee Hae Sung and Nurse Park Ji Na escape the falling crane in the last second but quickly realize that the falling crane wasn't the only dangerous object. In just a matter of seconds the entire street block is wrecked, buildings have collapsed, there are gianormous cracks all over the roads and collided cars block the roads in every direction. Lee Hae Sung quickly calls 911, runs up to the shocked Jung Ddol Mi, grabs her
stethoscope and sets off to save people. Meanwhile at the SOS-alarm central, the firefighter department also get thousands of incoming calls, and the fire fighther trucks storm out of the building in full speed. On the way, Captain Choi, Woo Sung and the others stop on eof the trucks and ask what is going on. The driver tells them there's an emergency and that they need to jump onboard.

Then the drama switches back to the scene of the incident and we see Lee Hae Sung run around and check up on every injured patient. He notices that Ddol Mi is also helping out on the side the best she can, and he let's out a faint smile. The firefighter's arrive to the scene and find a man who's got his lungs penetrated by a iron poll. They quickly call on Lee Hae Sung for help. Lee Hae Sung quickly stops them in their attempt to remove the iron poll and tells them that it's too dangerous, that the man could bleed to death if they pull it out, instead the best way to save his life is to transport him to the closest hospital. He crunches down to the dying man and reasures him with a very calm voice that everything will be okay, that he won't let him die like this. (;_; I'm falling for Hae Sung more and more, gosh D'x them feels <3)

Meanwhile, Director Lee and Robot Surgoen Woo Jin are riding the car back to the hospital from the meeting with the ministers. Director Park is very pleased with the meeting and says that he thinks the minister seems positive with the plans and that he feels that his "belly is growing bigger", how he thinks that fate has something more in store for him than him just being the head of a Hospital.
The scene changes again we see Woo Sung find another injured person. He calls for Lee Hae Sung and the others for help. In the next couple of minutes we see the group cooperate to help save the person and we finally see Hae Sung and Ddol Mi work together, something they probably never thought they'd be forced to do, considering their last conversation, but despite their previous inpressions of each other, they remain professional and don't let their feelings get in the way of their work. Nurse Park Ji Na helps the patient into the ambulance truck and Hae Sung expresses his disappointment over that he they weren't able to properly celebrate and eat pork belly. Nurse Ji Na smiles and tells him that he can buy her pork next time. After the ambulance leaves Hae Sung goes off to take a short nap only to be woken up a while later by Ddol Mi who comically kicks his leg (I just love their little moments x'D I sense a ship ~ hehehe)

She kicks him again and tells him that the fire fighter's have pulled up another patient, this time from a pit created by the earthquake and that Lee Hae Sung needs to go there to check on him. Hae Sung doesn't hesitate for even a second, despite being tired and runs off. Turns out the patient is in worse condition than they thought and Hae Sung tells the others the patient needs to be sent to a hospital immidiately. The fire fighter's tell him it'll take at least 15 more minutes until the ambulance arrives, but Hae Sung tells them that "then it's already too late". Ddol Mi offers to use her own ambulance truck and that she'll go with the patient. Hae Sung is surprised by her words as she never seemed like a serious doctor to him, but she assures him that "a doctor is still a doctor and that she can't stand seeing a patient die in front of her.She also adds that "would the ministry of welfare just randomly give out medical/doctor licenses to anyone? If I have one it means I probably deserved it right?" which amuses Lee Hae Sung and he approves of her idea.

While in the ambulance with the patient, she keeps in contact with Lee Hae Sung who tells her to go directly to the emergency room for a CT scan. Feeling slighty annoyed by his constant orders, she murmurs to herself that her doctor license isn't just a sheet of paper, it was given to her so she can save people's lives". At the same time, the streets have calmed down and the fire fighter's have gone to another area, only Hae Sung and Woo Sung remain. Woo Sung awkwardly tries to avoid Hae Sung but Hae Sung doesn't let him walk away as he starts asking him worridly if "fire fighter's aren't supposed to bring helmets with them when they work?" Woo Sung replies by angrily throwing the bag he was holding at Hae Sung. Hae Sung tells him to be more careful. If he doesn't take care of himself, what will Hae Sung tell their mom? To this Woo Sung becomes even more furious and snaps at him asking him "Just what kind of brother are you?" Hae Sung's gaze shifts and his expression becomes painful as he recalls a memory and replies "Yeah, I know it was my fault back then, but don't you think we should stop-" But Woo Sung snaps at him again, this time with even more anger in his voice. "With dad gone and mom in a coma, stop trying to act so damn cool and just shut up and live your own life" You're saving other people in the hospital but you couldn't even save your own parents? Just what kind of doctor are you?" But Woo Sung never manages to finish that sentence as Hae Sung slaps him hard across the face. Hae Sung looks more hurt than angry as he decides to just walk away from the scene. To this Woo Sung spits out that he's a coward and calls him trash for living and working for the hospital who made their mom that way, but Hae Sung doesn't turn around and just keeps walking. We get a short and fast glimpse of the past of what happened to their mom and how she was rushed to the hospital. "Tell me the truth you bastard! Bring our mother back!" Woo Sung shouts after Hae Sung. (T_T that sad music that played in the background hit me hard you guys. I hate to see brother's fight D'x I really wonder what it is that Hae Sung and the hospital know about the mom's accident that made Woo Sung hate his brother so much. They're obviously hiding something and it doesn't seem like Hae Sung likes what he knows, but he is unable to tell his brother the truth, which weakens their bond even more :/)

Meanwhile Ddol Mi has arrived at the hospital and we see her have a short hilarious conversation/misunderstanding with intern Ahn Dae Gil because he has a hard time understanding her busan dialect. (I really like how they try to throw in some comedy moments in the overall depressing and dark plot of the drama xP) But the comedy moment quickly dies out as Ddol Mi and Nurse Ji Na find out that the two beds that we're supposed to be reserved for their patient have alreayd been taken. Ddol Mi protests and says that the patient might die but the intern that works at the hospital replies to her that he's sorry but that he can't do anything. In this mess, Robot Surgeon Han Woo Jin arrives and asks what's going on. The intern tells him that the patient that's just arrived, has raptured his kidney

Han Woo Jin asks the intern if he's called the urologist to which the intern says that the urologist is busy at the moment. Han Woo Jin doesn't seem very bothered by the situation as we just waves off the situation by commeting that "there are no more beds in the ICU so the patients will need to go elsewhere" This makes Ddol Mi snap and protest that the patient is in critial condition and that he can't be moved to another hospital. Han Woo Jin looks puzzled at her and asks who she is, she introduces herself. He gets a bit surprised to hear her name and we are shown a glimpse of a memory in which Ddol Mi looks like she was Han Woo Jin's patient and looked very fond of him. Ddol Mi then remembers that Han Woo Jin is a surgeon and quickly asks him if he can patch up the kidney since it's something every surgeon should be able to do. But Woo Jin quickly rejects her idea and explains that he's not specialized in kidney surgery and that it could be dangerous for the patient if he performs the surgery. Ddol Mi tries to convince him but Han Woo Jin ignores her attempts. Nurse Park Ji Na runs after Han Woo Jin and confronts him about the real reason why he doesn't want to perform the surgery. She is convinced that he doesn't want to do that because he's just worried that it'll tarnish his spotless record. Woo Jin doesn't deny it which makes Park Ji Na shocked. He tries to explain himself by saying that she can't really blame him for acting this way, and that she isn't the right person to tell him what to do and not do, since she herself can't differentiate between "do and don'ts". before he leaves he also adds that "even if the result somehow come out positive, it still doesn't justify the means and how what she did to the patient (back in ep 1) may seem brave in her eyes, but to him she was reckless.

Since the patient got rejected, Ddol Mi goes back to the ambulance and tells her collegue from Busan what's happened. He insists that they just go back to Busan since their boss had called and asked where they are. Park Ji Na runs outsides and gets into a quarrell with the driver.

Meanwhile, Lee Hae Sung also returns to the hospital where he stumbles upon a reporter who needs treatment. He asks him about the sink holes and if he knows anything about what is going on in Seoul all of a sudden. The reporter tells him that they still don't know the real cause. He then continues to praise Lee Hae Sung for his hard work even if this place is not even a proper emergency room (they patience are recieving treatment in the waiting room). Lee Hae Sung replies confidently that "if there is medicine, nurses and doctors present, then any room could be an emergency room". Suddenly, he is interrupted by a woman, who he recognises as Eun Soyool. She looks around and asks him what is going on her and he asks her what she's doing her. She takes out a box and says that she's here to congratulate him on his promotion. (ironically? or is this a joke on her side, since he basically got demoted? Or maybe she is there to congratulate him for finally being able to escape the hellish working place? xD) Hae Sung takes the box and gives her surgeon gloves instead and asks her if she remembers her work as an intern and that she should help him treat the patients. She looks surrpised at him and tells him that she is psychiatrist but he ignores her and runs off to pick up a phone call from Ddol Mi who tells him that the patient got rejected by the hospital. Hae Sung orders her not to go anywhere and to go straight back to where he is, he will perform surgery on the patient himself. He then goes up to the nurse and tells her to call the anesthesiologist, and the blood bank and open the operation room. The Nurse asks him if he's serious but he tells her to hurry.

On the way back to the hospital, the patient suffers a cardic arrest and Ddol Mi and Ji Na do their best to perform CPR. They quickly arrive at the hospital and are met by Lee Hae Sung who rushes the patient quickly into the operation room. Ddol Mi's collegue, tries to convince her to leave this messy situation that has nothing to do with them, and that she should go with him back to Busan before their boss fires them. But Ddol Mi hesitates. Lee Hae Sung tells her that she can't leave since he needs her help which convinces her to stay.

They're prepared to start the surgery as Lee Hae Sung begs Nurse Ji Na, Ddol Mi and his friend? the psychiatrist to help him. They all look worriedly at him, but he tells that that even if he knows that none of them are professional surgeons, they can't just do nothing and leave the patient to die. "Today if we make a crazy miracle happen, this man can return to his family" and with those words, Lee Hae Sung starts the surgery.

The scene switches and we see Dr. Kang enjoy a evening off with her son Dongha and husband? (Assemblyman Goo Ja Hyuk) but her peaceful time is cut short when she sees the news about the sink holes on tv and decides to head back to the hospital and help out. She looks apologetic at Goo Ja Hyuk for not being able to spend a cozy evening with him, but he tells her that she is the most charming when she's a workaholic. When she walks away however, the camera focuses on his face and we see that his happy expression has changed a bit (hm...I think that's a hint that he's lying :s)

Dr. Kang arrives quickly to the hospital and asks the intern about the patients and what is going on. He tells her that the hospital is in a chatic state at the moment and then tells her that he knows what she's thinking, which is that "things would've been different if Lee Hae Sung was here".

Meanwhile, Lee Hae Sung and the others are in the middle of performing the surgery, however things don't go as smoothly as Hae Sung had planned as Ddol Mi makes a mistake and rips the thread instead of cutting with. Lee Hae Sung snaps at her and scolds her. She explains that she's never performed surgery before but he keeps scolding her about her mistakes until one of the other assistants (I think it was Nurse Park) tells him to calm down and how they're all working hard even if they aren't competent, and that he can't snap at them since he was the one who pulled them into this mess in the first place. Lee Hae Sung calms down and apologizes to Ddol Mi before the surgery continues. Things get more complicated and Hae Sung tells them that they'll have to remove one of his kidneys. The others protest and say that they can't do that without a guardian's approval and they don't even know if the patient has a genetic disease that runs in the family but Lee Hae Sung tells them that "living with dialysis is still better than being dead" to which someone protests "if you continue to do this you'll face another lawsuit" but Lee Hae Sung doesn't let that stop him as he replies "if he lives and files in a lawsuit, I'll be thankful". The surgery is a sucess but before they can roll out the patient out from the operation room, a reporter storms them and asks Lee Hae Sung if "this is the patient that got rejected by the hospital?". Lee Hae Sung let's the others roll away the patient as he stays to talk to the reporter.

The scene switches to the fire fighter department and we see Woo Sung, Captain Choi and the others turn on the tv in the right moment when the interview with Lee Hae Sung is airing live. In his office, Surgeon Woo Jin is also watching it, all the interns and Dr. Kang also, and in another shot, director Lee is also watching the interview with his family. In the interview Lee Hae Sung, without mentioning any names explains the situation and tells that "the doctor who rejected the patient knows who he is and that by rejecting the patient the doctor saved his reputation but risked the life of the patient" The reporter asks him "is this why you decided to perform the surgery? Did you have the confidence?" to which Lee Hae Sung fearlessly and boldly replies "how can anyone can confidence in this kind of hospital?"
Director Park's brother-in-law isn't amused by the news and asks the director if he called him over just to show off how amazing that doctor is? To which Director Park tells him that Lee Hae Sung is a troublemaker and uncooperative. They end up talking about the hospital's future and clash over how Director Park doesn't follow the wishes of his brother-in-law despite the fact that it is actually the brother-in-Law who is the real head of the hospital (or owner?). The scene switches and we see Nurse Ji Na and the psychiatrist walk home as a light starts creepily blinking in the background, signaling that something bad is about to happen. Meanwhile, Lee Hae Sung and Ddol Mi stayed at the hospital to look after the patient. They small-talk for a moment before Ddol Mi's cell phone starts to ring. It's her boss and he is furious over the fact that she neglected his orders to come back to the hospital and tells her that she is fired. Ddol Mi is shocked by the news but the boss gives her no room to protest. She tells Hae Sung that she must go back and talk to her boss, he tells her good luck and falls asleep. A few second later she awkwardly returns and asks him if he can lend her some money for the car fare. He tells her that he doesn't have cash right now but that he'll give it to her tomorrow.
She nags but he tells her off and falls asleep.

The scene switches and we see Dr. Kang get a phone call from Director Park who scolds her about how she could let Lee Hae Sung perform a surgery in their hospital and orders her to find out the identity of the patient immidiately before it ruins the hospital's reputation further.

Dr. Kang goes up to the female patient who got admitted to the hospital at the same time as the surgery patient, since it's confirmed that they were in the car together, and asks her about the identity of the male patient. The female tells her that she doesn't know, but Dr. Kang recognises her as the woman she saw in the car with the minister the other day.

She doesn't question the woman further, and instead heads off to the fire fighter department and asks if they've found any items in the car. The fire fighter gives her a small bag. Dr. Kang brings the bag home and looks through the items and find the male patient's id-card.

Turns out the male patient is none other than the minister. Director Kang is of course furious and aims all his anger at Woo Jin as he failed to recognize the patient. He tells that that if anyone finds out about this they, along with their ambition and plans for the hospital are finished. He orders the two to leave but Dr. Kang stays behind and suggests the Director to go meet with the reporters and admit their mistake. Director Park is confused and asks her to explain her reasoning so he can understand it. She tells him that she's confirmed the identity of the female patient and that she suspects that this woman has a intimate relationship with the minister and how the Director should use that information to his advantage and say how the hospital knew this beforehand and therefore decided to deliberately transfer the minister to another hospital so people wouldn't suspect that the two patient's were together. Director Park is pleased with her reasoning and she leaves.

The scene switches again and we see Lee Hae Sung peacefully sleeping besides the patient as Ddol Mi enters the room. She debates whether or not she wants to hit him for everything he made her go through but decides to spare him since he did save the patients life. Suddenly a masked man enters the room, Ddol Mi asks if he is the patient's guardian, the man tells her he would like to speak to Lee Hae Sung and Ddol Mi leaves the two alone in the room. The man takes off his mask and wakes up Lee Hae Sung. It's Director Lee. He tells Lee Hae Sung that they should transfer back the patient to Mirae Hospital but Lee Hae Sung tells him that even if they do that, it won't change anything he said in the interview. Director Lee insists that the patient can't stay in "this kind of hospital" which ticks Lee Hae Sung off and he yells at the Director about how "he made this place like this and how the patient should stay here. If anything happens, he'll take responsibility for it". Director Lee snaps and rips off his mask. Ddol Mi who stood on the other side of the door and evesdropped on the conversations smiles and murmurs how she thought Lee Hae Sung was just a annoying person but how he actually has a cool side to him too. (Ulala, the ship might start to sail soon ~ xP).
At the same time the reporters, news cast and science-observers are confused over the recent incidents and sink holes. The following morning Lee Hae Sung keeps his promise and gives Ddol Mi the money she asked for. He gives her extra money though, which he explains is consolation money, because she got fired because of him. She tells him that she is sad because she really wanted to become a doctor, and worries how she'll be able to face her father who really wished she'd become a doctor as well. Lee Hae Sung leans up to her and teasingly whispers "you're not fired".

To which she jolts up and raises her eyebrows at him. He explains that he called her hospital and explained the situation to them and also complimented her hard work which made her boss take back his words. So she's not fired. Ddol Mi is still in a state of shock as Hae Sung continues to tease her by saying "that was the first time I told a lie" but she hits him and tells him how he should've told her sooner. He also asks her why she has scissors in her pocket and she explaisn that it's from her mom's hair salon. She keeps hitting him until he moves away and looks up at the sky and remarks that something is strange. Ddol Mi looks up and notices that the rainbow is extremely big. They both run outside to the middle of the street when suddenly the ground starts to shake.

The sewers burst open and water starts leaking everywhere, buildings start to crack and shatter and cars collid with each other. Hae Sung saves Ddol Mi from an incoming car, and they both collapse to the ground. Random scenes switches every second and we see that this time the catastrophy has hit the entire city. The underground Metro stops in the middle of nowehere, buildings continue to shake and collapse and Director Lee's aquarium is slowly cracking. The effect of this earthquake is bigger than the previous one and the episode ends with everyone looking confused as to what will happen next.

My Thoughts:
Woah, this drama really gives you no time to even breath. So much stuff id going on left and right. What an amazing adrenaline-pumping ride! This episode gave the character's so much depth, and while I don't always agree with Lee Hae Sung's reasoning, I can't help but admire and love him. He is truly a doctor I wish existed in real life and the  actor is doing an outstanding job portraying this character. Ddol Mi is slowly starting to get her own spotlight too and I really like that; While her characterdevelopment is slow, it's still noticeable and considering the fact that we're just on episode 2, that's amazing.
Woo Jin is still an asshole, like always, but the actor is doing a great job. You have to have talent to make me love to hate a character. I kind of torn about how I feel about Woo Jin to be honest. I do understand his reasoning. He is realistc while Hae Sung is an idealistic dreamer, and I can see why they clash, but if you think about it, neither of them are wrong. And I really like that about these characters. It all depends how you look at the situation, so you can't really point fingers at anyone's point of view. However one thing I can say is that I really don't like (or love to hate) Woo Ji's attitude. It's one thing to kind of try to understand his reasoning but another to actually respect his way of expressing himself. He is just very bad with words. Every time he opens his mouth he just sounds so arrogant and nonchalant  x_x and that's why I think he's an asshole. His reasoning, I can somewhat try to understand but I don't think anyone has any reason to sound like an asshole to everyone around them. Director Park, he is still fishy. He's definitely kind of the antagonist of this drama, unless you cound the earthquake as the antagonist. Bad earthquake! Bad! <_<  Dr. Kang, she is also quite fishy to me. We already found out about her ambition in episode 1 which kind of makes her lean towards the "antagonists" side, since she is cooperating with Director Lee, but at the same time you can see hints that she is also on Lee Hae Sung's side. That's a very interesting point to her character and I can't way too see the moment when she'll have to decide who's side she truly wants to stand on. She won't be able to balance between Director Park and Lee Hae Sung forever, sadly. And i just hope that when the time comes, I'll be able to understand her reasoning and hopefully not hate her too much xD Backstories, like what happened to Hae Sung's mom, and why his relationship with Woo Sung is so bad, is slowly being revealed, and honestly I really like the pacing of this drama. The romance is moving slowly but surely too. I really can't find any flaws in this episode. Even the CGI has improved! I can't find anything else to say. Episode 2 was amazing! I can't wait for episode 3 *_*. What did you guys think? Did you enjoy this episode and recap? Episode 3 will be up very soon so look forward to that ~ Well then, until next time ~
